Florida has turned homecoming into a showcase for retro uniforms. Over the last several seasons the Gators have worn two distinct throwback looks, one from the 1960s and one from the 1970s. If you want a custom Florida Gators jersey with a vintage feel, it helps to know which era you are picking.
The 1960s look
Florida's athletics site describes the 1960s throwback as the uniform of the era when Steve Spurrier played quarterback and won the 1966 Heisman Trophy.
- Jersey: Blue, with an over-the-shoulder orange and white stripe.
- Pants: White, with orange and blue stripes down each side.
- Socks and cleats: White crew socks with a blue top stripe, and black cleats with white laces.
The Gators wore the blue jersey for homecoming against Auburn in 2019, with a white helmet and a block "F" decal. The school noted it was the first time the top had been worn in a game since September 30, 2006. For the 2020 homecoming game against Missouri, the helmet switched to blue, with a gray facemask, an orange center stripe flanked by white, and the block "F" in a circle used in the early 1960s.
The 1970s look
In 2025, Florida brought back a 1970s throwback for its October 18 homecoming game against Mississippi State. As reported when it was unveiled, that package used:
- An orange helmet with a white interlocking UF logo.
- A blue jersey with white and orange stripes on the shoulders.
- White pants with side stripes.
The same look had last been worn for the 2021 homecoming game against Vanderbilt.
How the two compare
Both throwbacks use a blue jersey and white pants, so at a distance they look related. The differences are in the details: the 1960s version is tied to the Spurrier era and the block "F," while the 1970s version is tied to the interlocking UF on an orange helmet. On a jersey alone, the stripe pattern on the shoulders is the main clue.
Reading throwback listings
Product titles make it easier to tell which era a jersey references. Titles we reviewed include phrases such as "Bring Back 1960s Throwback" and "1960s Throwback Vapor Limited," with examples like Eugene Wilson III No. 3 in a blue alternate, DJ Lagway No. 2 in orange and Tim Tebow No. 15 in a royal alternate. A few tips:
- Look for the decade in the title. If it says 1960s, expect the Spurrier-era stripe pattern.
- Compare the photos to the descriptions above. Shoulder stripes are the easiest detail to check.
- Decide on name and number last. Some fans put a modern player's number on a 1960s design; others prefer a number from the era or their own.
Number ideas for a throwback
- 66 for 1966, Spurrier's Heisman year.
- Your graduation year, or the year you first saw a game in Gainesville.
