Miami won its first College Football Playoff game against Texas A&M in the 2025 first round, and Malachi Toney scored the only touchdown. The freshman lost a fumble earlier in the game, then answered with a jet sweep into the end zone. He finished with 113 all-purpose yards.
Bouncing Back in the Same Game
For a freshman in his first playoff game, a lost fumble could have been the story. Instead, Toney kept getting the ball and delivered the play that decided the game.
A Record Along the Way
The same game gave Toney Miami's single-season receptions record, passing Xavier Restrepo. He would finish the season with 109 catches, the most in the FBS.
What Came Next
Miami followed with a 24-14 Cotton Bowl win over Ohio State and a Fiesta Bowl win over Ole Miss before losing to Indiana in the national title game. Toney scored in the semifinal and the final.
From the Playoffs to No. 1
All of that came in No. 10. Toney wears No. 1 in 2026, and Miami's anniversary throwback, built on the 2001 national champions' design, puts that number on a classic uniform. Fan jerseys of that version are listed in green, orange and white.
